- Who it suits
- People comfortable with technical setup and long waits. The gap between doing the work and any payout is routinely a year or more, and often there is no payout at all.
- What it costs
- Time and technical effort. Test tokens are free, but node operation can mean server costs, and the work is real work.
How to take part
A blueprint rather than a guarantee. Following every step improves your chances; nothing makes a distribution certain.
Find testnets from official sources only
Start at the project's own documentation or Discord. Testnet faucet phishing is common and costs people real wallets.
Use a dedicated wallet
Testnet work involves connecting to unaudited, deliberately experimental software. Never use a wallet holding real funds.
Complete the full task list, not the easy ones
Most testnets publish structured tasks. Partial completion has been a common reason for exclusion.
Report bugs properly
Projects can see who filed useful reports. Documented, reproducible bug reports have carried weight in several past allocations.
Run a node if you can
Validator and node operation is harder, far less crowded, and consistently weighted higher than casual transaction activity.
Keep records
Note the wallet used, the dates and what you completed. Claim processes sometimes require proof of participation months later.
What this has paid historically
Figures below are from the distributions named, on the dates named. They describe what happened once and are not a forecast. Most campaigns in every category pay nothing at all.
Hyperliquid — closed alpha and testnet, 2022–2023
Testnet activity from November 2022 through May 2023 formed the first phase of the points system that fed the November 2024 HYPE distribution — roughly 31% of total supply to around 90,000 wallets.
Source: Hyper Foundation; eco.com summary, 2026Common mistakes
- Using a main wallet on experimental contracts.
- Doing the first three tasks and stopping. Depth of participation is usually what separates allocations.
- Expecting a token. Many testnets conclude with no distribution whatsoever, and that outcome is normal rather than exceptional.
- Losing the wallet. A year is a long time to keep a seed phrase safe, and people do lose them.
